Empirical Research

This section highlights the beginnings of Afrometrics: survey research about Africana/Black communities and issues.  Although many public opinion polling agencies exist and carry out research about Africana communities, they do not account for cultural relevance  in their research. Afrometrics is built on the premise of doing for self and  reports on the opinions of Africana people regarding a given community issue, social phenomenon, or public policy that impacts Africana communities.

African Americans Weigh In on Solutions to Police Brutality
What are some of the different ways that Black people think about solutions to police brutality? Over the last two months, Afrometrics surveyed African Americans online to determine how they envisioned solutions to the critical problem of police violence against Black communities. Several suggested responses to police brutality were gathered from policy think tanks and community organizations and placed into a questionnaire (Solutions to Police Violence Questionnaire).  The questionnaire was distributed online through social-media platforms and was completed by 78 African Americans. A Factor Analysis was conducted to determine what combination of variables accounted for the majority of the variance in people’s ideas about solutions to police use of excessive force.

The Relationship between Culture, Learning Styles , and Academic Achievement: A Case Study of Young Black Males
Because it is far from an encapsulated phenomenon, the condition of young Black males in America is of critical significance because of its manifold consequences on the developmental trajectory of the entire community of people of African descent in America.  There are a constellation of social intuitions whose policies have a variety of interacting effects on the life experiences of Black males, including law, politics, economics, health care etc. In light of the distressing social indicators, this study is an Afrocentric investigation into how the learning environment can be optimally structured to maximize the full potential social and educational achievement of African American males so that they may increase their capacity to be of service to their own communities.  The primary objective of Afrocentricity is African development on African terms.  This research is concerned with how to realign and relocate the educational experiences of Black males onto their own cultural developmental terms.

Gender, Achievement, and Learning Styles
Cultural monism in social sciences often manifests as the tendency for some social scientists to assume the generic universalism and cultural neutrality of science (1991).  When this culturally neutral approach is taken, little if any attention is given to variation in human thought and behavior across race and ethnicity.  African American people share not only common racial classification, but also cultural characteristics that are a part of their ethnic identity.   Comparison of students’ learning styles across race has revealed rewarding and actionable empirical differences in the learning modalities of African American youth in comparison to their diverse counterparts in American schools.

Poll Results: Effects of the Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman Case on American Thought
On August 4th, Afrometrics conducted an online poll on how the killing of Trayvon Martin and the subsequent George Zimmerman trial affected people’s attitudes.  Several questions were asked  regarding: what solutions people saw to the problem of racial injustice in the United States, how surprised or not surprised people were at the outcome of verdict in the Zimmerman trial, how stressed people were at the killing of Trayvon Martin, whether or not people felt Trayvon’s killing sent a message to African Americans and what that message was, and the extent to which African American lives are valued in the United States.
